British Council British Council

The British Council is the United Kingdom's international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations.
The British Council in Bulgaria meets the aspirations of young Bulgarians by creating opportunities in education, English language learning and cultural exchange. We work with our partners, both Bulgarian and British, to showcase British excellence, innovation and creativity. We are a major channel for the UK's public diplomacy in Bulgaria - putting Bulgarian people in touch with people in the UK. We work for the benefit of the individual and for the mutual benefit of Britain and Bulgaria.
The British Council worked in Bulgaria for a few years after World War II, but then closed.  Cultural relations between Britain and Bulgaria nevertheless developed slowly, but surely.  Towards the end of the 1980s the British Council expanded its work in Bulgaria significantly, and in 1991 we opened our own office. 2001 marked 10 years of the restored formal British Council presence.
We implement the Cultural Agreement between Bulgaria and the UK.
